This year’s edition of the Formula 1 championship, with all that it entails, can probably be said to be one of the most turbulent and high-profile in a very long time. Here are some of the latest headlines.
As anyone who has been following this year’s season will be well aware, there has been total domination by two drivers from the same team, namely the Mercedes stable. Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton have been absolutely unbeatable this season. At present, Rosberg holds the lead on 202 points, only 11 points ahead of Hamilton on 191. So it’s very even between the two drivers and if you look at the odds, the odds are exactly the same on both drivers.
This is perhaps not surprising given the competition that seems to exist between the two Mercedes drivers despite the fact that they belong to the same team. In the last race, Hamilton refused to obey the team’s order to let Rosberg pass him in order for him to further secure his lead in the drivers’ championship. Now, as I said, he refused, and in doing so, knocked a few points off his team-mate.
One person who is less happy with his lot in life is the supreme champion of the last four seasons, Sebastian Vettel. The German currently sits in fifth place, a whopping 80 points behind leader Rosberg, and he recently voiced his criticism of his team and the fact that he is not only being overtaken, but also disqualified. Red Bull Racing, which runs a Renault engine simply doesn’t keep up with Mercedes engines.
The question, however, is whether this is the only reason. Red Bull Racing team-mate and co-driver Daniel Ricciardo has beaten Vettel a total of five times this season and is the closest to the two Mercedes drivers, in third place with 131 points. 60 points behind runner-up Hamilton. Most recently, the Australian was also the winner of the Hungarian GP.Bookmark the permalink.
